This class will be led by one of our Assistant Trainers and monitored by one of our Senior Trainers.

At the beginning of class, our trainer will ask all students what they’d like to work on. A plan will be developed in real-time.

We’ll work on your choice of basic obedience behaviors, such as:

  • Reliable Name Response: A reliable name response is crucial to training any dog manners, getting and keeping attention under distraction, and overall safety.  It’s not good enough that your dog knows her name, the reliable response of looking at you when hearing the name is the goal!
  • Reliable Recall: A reliable recall is important for every dog in every situation.  For maximum safety, for maximum enrichment and for some off-leash freedom a reliable recall is needed.
  • Sit & Stay, Down & Stay:  The positions of Sit and Down and getting your dog to stay in that position.
  • Calm & Polite Greetings: Your dog will learn to sit or stand calmly to be greeted, or while you greet another person.
  • Loose Leash Walking: Teaching your dog to walk next to you in any situation ensures a lovely walk in the park, around the neighborhood or even a great experience at events or field trips.
  • Hand Target: Your dog will learn to put his nose on your hand on cue. This behavior can be used for many outcomes including preventing your dog from jumping or even keeping your dog in your personal space.
  • Leave It: Your dog will learn to not touch things that you ask him not to touch such as your dinner, your slippers or that porcupine on a walk.
  • No Jumping: Your dog will learn to Stand with 4 paws on the floor or Sit instead of jumping when excited.
  • Doggie Zen:  Teach your dog impulse control to prevent door bolting, stealing and more
  • Remaining calm for distractions: Teach your dog right from the start that she doesn’t need to bark or pull toward distractions such as other dogs, people, squirrels, etc.

No Reactive or Aggressive dogs.  We have an entire series of courses for those dogs who  bark and lunge at other dogs and/or people.  If you know that your dog barks or lunges at people or other dogs, please call us to inquire about what class to start with.  Dogs who struggle around other dogs or people can’t learn in an environment where there are at least 6 other dogs and their family.  At Pack of Paws we are absolutely the area experts for working with reactive and aggressive dogs.  Being in the right class to begin with is crucial for your learning experience as well as the experience of the dog.  Even the friendliest dog who is barking “just to say hello” will struggle unnecessarily in a busy classroom.

PLEASE NOTE: Do not feed your dog their regular meal immediately before your training session. If your lesson interrupts your regular feeding schedule, please feed your dog only a small portion of their regular meal.

All handlers must be 18 years or older and physically able to restrain the dog. Persons under the age of 18 are only permitted to hold the leash with an adult present and handling a secondary safety line.
