Description

A reliable stay can be one of the most important skills your dog learns.

Whether your dog weighs 5 pounds or 180 pounds, breaking a stay at the wrong moment can create serious safety risks. A dropped piece of toxic food, an open door, a child running by, or a toy rolling into the street can all become dangerous situations when a dog decides to release themselves instead of waiting for permission.

In this workshop, you’ll learn why dogs self-release from position behaviors such as Sit, Down, and Place, and how to address the root cause of the behavior rather than simply correcting the symptom.

We’ll cover practical training techniques that teach your dog to remain in position until released, build clarity around release cues, and increase your dog’s understanding of their responsibilities during a stay.

You will also learn how to systematically proof your dog’s stay by introducing distractions, movement, distance, and real-world challenges. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have the tools to build a reliable stay that holds up even when life gets exciting.

Whether you’re looking to improve everyday manners, strengthen your dog’s obedience skills, or create a safer companion, this workshop will help you build the consistency and reliability every dog owner wants.

Things to bring:

  • Dogs should be wearing a collar or harness.  No slip or choke collars please, and no head collars.  If your dog wears a prong collar for control, please have an additional harness or flat collar for any distance work.
  • TONS of your dog’s favorite treats.  Suggested items include: packaged treats, people food like cheese, steak, chicken or other left overs.  Bring a large amount and several varieties of awesome food.  We may be working outside for a portion of the lesson and there will be no treats or food available for sale if you run out.
  • A way to manage your treats – ie., training kilt, treat pouch, training vest.  Pockets will be inadequate and you won’t be able to work out of a zip lock baggie.
  • Your dog’s favorite toys.   (more than one)
  • Regular 6 ft leash that you walk your dog on.  NO RETRACTABLE LEASHES.
  • Long leash (not a retractable).  Minimum 20 ft, longer is welcome.
  • A whistle if you want to teach your dog a whistle recall.
  • A sense of humor

If you will need help with your dog’s gear, please contact us and arrange to arrive early.

No Reactive Dogs – Dogs must be friendly toward other dogs and people

Dogs should know their own name and respond reliably to it
