Feeding your dog

Your dog should eat twice per day, morning and evening.

Food is a huge resource to your dog which makes feeding time a great training opportunity.

If you must feed your dog from a bowl: Be sure and ask for something simple first before you feed him.  Give him 20 minutes to eat the food, if it’s not gone in 20 minutes, pick it up and no food until next feeding time.  (If he is eating it at the 20 minute mark, don’t take it away from him but if he walks away from that bowl remove it until next feeding time).  Feeding time is a great training opportunity!

Does your dog like his food?  Measure out his food and do some training!  No need for a bowl.  This gives you the opportunity to hand feed your dog and train your dog at the same time!  And your dog is working for his dinner!

Why use a bowl?  Put his food in a food puzzle such as a Busy Buddy, Kong, Bobs a Lot, Wobbler, there are many awesome food toys on the market that will make busy work out of dinner!  You’ll have a thinking dog who’s enjoying working for his dinner.

No Free feeding.  Free Feeding means that food is left out for the dog to nibble on and graze on.  Eliminate this option for the dog and use all of his food as a training and relationship building opportunity.
